The reigning Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings have solidified some of the depth of the roster. On Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2015, Kings President/GM Dean Lombardi announced that the team has come to terms with forward Jordan Nolan on a three-year contract extension.
Lately, Nolan has been playing on a line with rookie center Nick Shore, and Kyle Clifford. Not known for scoring, Nolan has just 14 goals and 10 assists in 170 career regular season games. Lately he has been getting on the scoreboard with at least some regularity. He has scored four goals this season, but three have come in his last 10 games.
At 6'3" 220 lbs, he is a big body, and is more about grit and toughness than scoring, but over the long haul of the regular season, and playoffs, depth scoring alleviates pressure on the star players.
Nolan was originally a seventh round (186 overall) pick of the Los Angeles Kings in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. Nolan's previous contract was a two-year deal signed in July 2013. The new contract extension calls for him to be paid slightly less than $1 million per season, so it is very salary cap-friendly for the Kings, and provides stability for Nolan.
The powerful forward was a part of both Kings Stanley Cup championship teams. This new contract is a great show of loyalty by the Kings' organization. Nolan is the son of Buffalo Sabres head coach Ted Nolan.
The Los Angeles Kings are currently in the midst of a seven-game win streak. They have defeated in succession, Tampa Bay, Columbus, Calgary, Washington, Tampa Bay, Colorado, and San Jose. The Kings will play home games against the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday, Feb. 24 vs Detroit, and Thursday, Feb. 26 vs Ottawa. The Kings currently have a record of 28-18-12 and are in 3rd place in the Pacific division.
